Michael Stevenson chosen as a standout work at the Biennale of Sydney

Installation detail from Michael Stevenson’s 'Serene Velocity in Practice: MC510/ CS183'. Commissioned by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki with commissioning partners the Biennale of Sydney and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA).

An installation by Michael Stevenson, who exhibited at the Biennale Arte in 2003, has been chosen as standout work at the Biennale of Sydney by Ralph Rugoff, director of London’s Hayward Gallery and Artistic Director for the Biennale Arte 2019.

Michael’s Serene Velocity in Practice: MC510/CS183 (2017) is described as “A provocative and creepy installation of an imaginary California college featuring apocalyptic classrooms animated by the rhetoric of right-wing Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel and a new age/Christian fraudster.”

Some of the pieces from Michael’s Venice exhibition are part of the This is New Zealand exhibition on now at City Gallery Wellington. This Is New Zealand also re-presents Venice works by New Zealand artists Michael Parekowhai (2011) and Simon Denny (2015).
